- <p> DIED. Christine Jorgensen, 62, early recipient of a
- sex-change operation; of cancer; in San Clemente, Calif. Born
- George Jorgensen in New York City in 1926, he became tormented
- by the feeling that he was a woman trapped in the body of a man.
- In 1952 the ex-G.I. went to Denmark for a series of operations
- that American physicians denounced as "mutilative surgery." With
- time, however, Jorgensen's international notoriety brought
- handsome sums on the lecture and nightclub circuits.
