  15. sex-change operation; of cancer; in San Clemente, Calif. Born
  16. George Jorgensen in New York City in 1926, he became tormented
  17. by the feeling that he was a woman trapped in the body of a man.
  18. In 1952 the ex-G.I. went to Denmark for a series of operations
  19. that American physicians denounced as "mutilative surgery." With
  20. time, however, Jorgensen's international notoriety brought
  21. handsome sums on the lecture and nightclub circuits.
